ECO- nomy in today’s world… moves to basics again…..
In other words ECO- nomy (from the Greek word οικονομία= one who manages a household) would be transformed again to TROPHO-nomy (from thw Greek word τροφή= food) . And I will explain my self :
More and more we are discussing on the food crisis, arising by climate change and violent restructuring of crops, due to world trade and political instability in various regions of our planet. Additionally, people increasing their consumer needs, as “hot” economies (India and China mainly), gathering more per capita wealth leading to increased consumption of food and energy.
Many analysts explaining sophisticated models of human behaviour patterns for the future. Other scientists warning for exploitation of resources leading us to a disaster non reversable. I think even if all of them are right, what would happen next is a new form of social web-structuring. People will go back to basics!!!
Economy itself started as an effort of humans to secure their food. Development of our urban system of living was based on organised production of food and stable supply. That led society to the other forms of activity – education, culture, social exchange). In our world of insecurity, what comes next, is our effort to find our supplies again. And that effort for sustainable supply of food (and most probably our struggle for water..) would bring some dramatic changes.
Unfortunately my prediction is not optimistic. The key words for future will be : Isolation, Protectionism, Nationalism.
Isolation = because people would care more on their own sustainable living in forms of smaller units. Family and Community would be more important than interdependence of world trade.
Protectionism = the need to protect your own interest on sustainable living against solidarity in equal distribution of wealth, would be stronger and dominant in human thinking. New mainstreams ideas on protectionism already arising in the think tanks of our world.
Nationalism= subsequent thinking of isolation is the need to dominate scarce resources available to our immediate circle of living. Even larger nations could be divided to smaller units with divided identities, based not on higher meanings of common cultural values, but on ways of consuming and sustainable supply of basics neccessary for our daily living.
my pessimistic view must not be seen as a doctrine with ne exemptions or not alternatives. But are you seeing a major social force to drive us to another direction?

The theory that societies will move toward a smaller, more sustainable framework is a movement that has been a topic in the US for a number of years. “Buy local, support local,” is becoming more and more prevalent as citizens try to reduce dependence on imported goods and buy those produced domestically. The global economy is such a daunting idea that people are inclined to move in the other direction toward a simpler life. Some even see it as a positive move, having less impact on the environment. I guess it’s all in how we look at things!
