Top 10 of 2008….political, social, sports, arts

As I did in summer, today i will present my top 10 events of 2008. Events that influenced our life in various fields and in my opinion will influence next year. Personally, 2008 leaves a bad taste. I wouldnt count it as a positive year. It was the year of fear and uncertainty and the most disappointing thought is that 2009 could be worse. In 2008 i lost my optimism.  The key words among my friends are : Professional Insecurity, Fear, Disappointment. If  i’m write or wrong, time will tell. Anyhow, hope dies last.

On the following list of ten events (presented as a countdown), I’m including a picture of 2008 in various sectors of our life. The judgement is yours if its a real picture or not. Bear in mind that all humans we are sensing history on a personal basis, primarily. So the following list is very personal and m viewers could add or change other important incidents.

No 10 – The comeback of Sir Alex and his favourite band (sorry football team…!!!) Manchester United.

gfx_logoI never understood why Manchester United had such an appeal to me.  When i was a child back in 70′s , facing the Golden decade of Liverpool, I was still amazed  by Manchester U. In my childish mind was seen as a rock band. Because of its popularity, its political history, and the players that became legends through the club, Manchester was always a symbol of a rock era. In contemporary football history, George Best, Eric Cantona, Roy Kean,David Beckham were the rock mega stars, but in my view, Ryan Giggs was and is the real rock symbol of the team. In sports, the victory on Champion’s League final in Moscow, was the last tribute to an excellent player that soon his carreer comes to an end on the pitch. I hope we will see him more outside the pitch.

No 9- TV on The Radio – Dear Science

This NY at Brooklyn group, along with John Mellenchamp and Cold Play this year, created a mood towards the dark years to come. Tv on the radio, were facing the problem with hope, by creating a party music album. I had also other choices in mind , but in the era of despair i choose the most optimistic one. Here is the song  Family Tree

logoNo 8- Beijing Olympics and Olympic Flame fiasco over Tibet

I wrote during 2008 on the political issues around China’s propaganda in order to keep well hidden the skeletons in the closet. What happened during the Olympic Flame travel all over the world, in combination with other events this year, demonstrated people’s will not to be obedient to the mass media images. People with courage and braveness, and lots of anger, destroyed the fakeness of China’s miracle. Sponsor’s plans and TV’s Broadcasters, couldnt repair in people’s minds, the image of a modern country that is integrating to the modern world. The question of Tibet, raised issues of human rights and if combine Olympic’s dopping cases, put the model of modern Olympics in question.

No 7- The maturity of social media

Namely blogging, Face Book, My Space, Twitter and other social media plattforms demonstrated their undoubtful strength during 2008. Obama’s campaign and recent Greek riots verified that people are forming their own media sources and peer to peer campaigns are more powerful than ever. I’m quoting Ms Leslie Harris, President of the Center of Democracy & Technology in Washington DC :”The most important lesson is to trust the Internet. The Internet is not a “problem to be solved” as lawmakers often view it. It is our most important and innovative tool for reinvigorating our democracy and returning power to the people.”

s25142437706_7462No 6- The Irish No to EU’s Lisbon Treaty

The country that few months later was close to bankruptcy, earlier this year, halted the EU’s road to verify the Lisbon Treaty. Supposingly the succesor of European Constitution -that was agreed after long negotiations among European Member States of European Union- would pass anonymously through parliaments and without referrendums. The strong will of Ireland to put a referrendum in place and the failure to persuade irish people to vote in favour, disclose the problems of European bureaucracy at large. Lack of transparency, the democratic deficit of its institutions, the monetary discipline that overrules labour legislation and social policies, makes the Union less and less attractive to its own citizens. In 2009, a new effort to persuade Irish is under way. But is there anyone that trully believes, if we were asking all Europeans to vote on the  Treaty, the majority of the answers would be yes?

brigadesalqassam42wjNo 5- Isreali Palestinian Conflict

A long ago announced conflict, finally broke out. Isreal for sure, wouldnt stand for long Hamas’ attacks to civilian targets and Hamas wouldnt stand for long Israel’s constraints to their constitutional freedom. The attacks of Hamas on Dec 24th and the retaliation by Israeli Air Force on Dec 26th, will lead us to a general turmoil in the region. Bear in mind, that financial crisis would be a triggering factor, as long as Europeans and US administration wouldnt be able to interferre more than the traditional diplomatic means. For sure the conflict will run all over 2009 and the danger of the involvement of other regional players is most possible.

No 4- The failure of Bali, raising hopes in Poznan

“Climate Change” needs global sollutions to a global problem. The failure in Bali conference on climate change could be just a negative step, and efforts continued till the meeting in Poznan that raised hopes that a new deal is possible. I have serious doubts on that, since Obama didnt announce yet his commitment towards a deal and other major players waiting him to decide. Still 2009 is a crucial year, time is ticking, and the problem consider us all. Lets hope!!! And lets act to push them in a decision.

164698No 3-  Obama’s election as President of USA

I  quote Paff Diddy’s description of the Obama election :“I felt like my vote was the vote that put him into office. It was down to one vote, and that was going to be my vote. And that may not be true, but that’s how much power it felt like I had. “

The above quotation, expresses the majority of americans voting for Obama. His campaign had a key phrase : Power to People!!! Now if this hope will turn to acts excusing the key phrase, is something i cannot answer. Time will tell also. But for sure, Obama will face major historical challenges and the rest of the world will keep fingers crossed for his decisions.

No 2- Greek Riots on December of 2008

In my view , Greek Riots are linked directly to No 1 “the Financial Crisis”. Is the first symptom of a world full of despair and anger. The accidental murdering of a teenager of 15, in the center of Athens, was not the cause but the excuse. A Greek youth that facing only problems:  lack of ideology, weak political representation, a finacial oligarchy leading them to poverty and social discomfort, states that situation could not continue like this. Radical changes are needed, a real paradigm shift is the demand. The extended coverage of the riots by international media, the stress of other European governments to explain and to prevent riots to be epidemic, gives the importance of this violent period. I hope that the political system took the message. Hope is again the word, but i’m pesimistic on that, considering my country.

2903771618_ce7eb01a35_mNo 1- The Collapse of Bond’s Markets

The collapse of stock markets, but most importantly the collapse of the banking system, was the major event of 2008. The amazing element of this crisis was behavioural. Nobody was predicting the storm that was coming. Or that, or everybody was lying. Both options are quite discouraging for our future. Both options are proving the corrupted political system, the institutional weakness of our modern capitalism, the lack of alternative models for seeking out sollutions. Even when governments assured us for the maximum of efforts to protect income and society not falling apart, is difficult to believe them. Greek riots proved that very few people today are having trust to state institutions. And if tomorrow will not bring alternatives, transparency, democratic ethics, I fear that crisis will pass not only to real economy, but to real politics!!!. The answers would not be found in violence. Only if there would be the ultimate option.

Xmas is coming….An optimistic article

310048508_84f87f613b_m1Dear all,

I have promised to write something optimistic in the spirit of Xmas. This year financial crisis would keep us more at home, with friends and family, watching DVD’s or TV and listening to more music. I suggest that all of you keep up with home parties and take advantage of every possible chance for entertainment. But i would like to share my predictions for 2009 with you. I will not complaint or play Kassandra’s role in an ancient tragedy. The opposite : I will highlight all the possible positive things for you.

Next year wil be amazing and positive. Why?

1) Obama, Brown and other world leaders, will find the sollution to boost economy, to improve environment through a new Green Agreement and will eliminate poverty and conflicts. Our PASOK leader George Papandreou will shift politics of the country and lead us to a new era of prosperity and peace.

2) Multinationals will distribute further global wealth and will apply a new code of ethics, based on the principle of limit profits in favour of social investment and better paid employment.

3) Microsoft and Google will take the decision to distribute for free hardware and software to all people IT illiterate in order to secure access to knowledge to all humans on earth on equal basis. Also will donate significant amounts to open source communities and as a result software will be distributed freely to all communities with limited financial sources.

3046086664_31d7932f12_m4) Cinema and arts will gain more financial support globally. A new century of cultural production will begin with more people creating and producing their work, without financial burdens and expensive PR experts. Radio and Internet will be again the main media for information and knowledge distribution.

5) In 2009′s  world, Al Queida fighters will give up their weapons and will support an everlasting peace that was never experienced before by our planet. Democratic regimes with total respect of woman and human rights will emerge globally and the most important: without even a bullet to be shot.

6) In a sudden move, International Olympic Federation and all high level athletes would decide to eliminate doping from sports and sponsors will link their finance to develop massive programs of sports than to finance expensive PR events. A new era of sport’s industry would start based on people’s joy for sports and not to Media and Multinational’s interests.

7) In another sudden move big players in food industry would sign an agreement on consumer protection and “chemical clean” production. They would finance a huge restructuring program of farming and land cultivation, securing a bright nutritional future for all of us.

254091972_f8aae17372_m28) EU Commission decides to declare Europe as a Green area. So in a period of 5 years : all cars must have hybridic engines, stricter urban planning, massive housing projects for poor parts of population and every citizen must have equal and free access to education in all levels (academic institutions included…)

9) Governments will decide to pass to a different democratic system. Will pass more responsibilities and participatory mechanisms to society. Public information would be equally accessed by everyone in combination with point (3). Corruption will disappear because the new world would not need weapons or armies. All those military structures would be given to societies and huge numbers of employment would be created for recycling the useless weaponry. Automatically funds will be distributed to researchers and new scientists to draw teh new peaceful world. Human sciencies and health research would be really boosted. Pharmaceutical companies would offer medicines to eliminate diseases and to face new ones. Costs would be so low that countries in africa would be relieved by HIV or other killing agents…

10) My son will finish University on time, my friend Marcella will have a major success on her work and my other friend Sabina would be a world champion (i dont give last names…they know for what i’m talking about). My mother will be relieved by diabetes and I will get married again HAPILLY!!! All my other friends would be happy with their lives, breaking their current isolation, showing understanding to each other and never fight again.

If i was writing to Santa Clause that would be my letter….mor or less!!!

Happy Xmas to all.

Και με ενοχλεί ότι κινδυνεύουμε να ξεχάσουμε όλα τα σκληρά διλήμματα που έφεραν τον Ομπάμα στην Προεδρία των ΗΠΑ. Κράτος ή αγορά; Περιβάλλον ή εταιρείες πετρελαιοειδών; Τέλος του αμερικάνικου επεκτατισμού ή μια νεα μορφή επεμβάσεων; Μια νεα παγκόσμια οικονομία ή η τέλεια απορρύθμιση;

Και θέτω εδώ μόνο τα διεθνή διλήμματα. Πέραν των εσωτερικών θεμάτων των ΗΠΑ. Και έχω την αίσθηση ότι ο Ομπάμα εκλέχτηκε πραγματικά από τους φτωχούς. Που προσήλθαν μαζικά να ψηφίσουν. Και όχι με την λογική γηπέδου. Αλλά με την λογική ότι πραγματικά κάποιος μπορεί να γίνει ο πρόεδρος τους. Ο Πρόεδρος των φτωχών λοιπόν θα δικαιολογήσει τις προσδοκίες τους;

webimg_20411Αναγκαστικά η καταφατική απάντηση, περνάει από το όραμα του Ομπάμα για τον κόσμο. Και πως ;

β. Η βελτίωση της κατάστασης των φτωχών θα γίνει μέσα από υπέρμετρη κατανάλωση πόρων του πλανήτη από την αμερικάνικη οικονομία ή μέσα από τον σεβασμό του περιβάλλοντος και την αλλαγή του προτύπου ζωής στις ΗΠΑ;

γ. Θα βελτιωθεί η κατάσταση των φτωχών μέσα από νέους πολέμους και επεμβάσεις ή μέσα από μια νέα παγκόσμια ειρήνη; Μέσα από μια νέα ισορροπία ενός διεθνούς συστήματος χωρίς κράτη παρίες και με πραγματικό σεβασμό της εθνικής κυριαρχίας και των ανθρωπίνων δικαιωμάτων;

Short News in english

According to an article in Wall Street Journal, Senator Charles Grassley, Iowa Republican, alleged that Charles Nemerrof, Emory University’s Professor, was paid more than 500,000 $ by Glaxo at the same time that he was conducting Federal funded research on relative drugs. Senator Grassley is investigating sponsoring relations between medical industry and academics, resulting favorable statements or articles on produced products. Question : Will some of our MEP’s in Brussels take a similar initiative and conduct a related investigation?

Jesus walked over the water in Sea of Galilee, in some years people could cross the lake by walking on the bottom. Water shortage is getting dramatic in the area and Israeli state decided to ration water for farming and in the future for home use. Fisherie in the area is destroyed and local fishermen remain poor but no Jesus to follow. If you add the urgent water crisis in Cyprus this year and the need to import water from Greece, climate change in Med basin needs immediate action.

I have seen on Living on Earth an audio, presenting the idea of “getting a green path out of red”. In other words there is a dialogue in Washington that recent financial crisis could lead investments to a new environmental bailout plan, especially to renewable energy and ecological friendly technologies. Listen to the story here. Another Question : Will we have in EU the same dialogue?

A huge study (the largest ever conducted) will start in USA on children’s health from conception to age 21. The study aims to learn how the environment and other factors affect youngsters’ health, especially development of such conditions as autism, asthma, learning disabilities and obesity. Scientists will examine factors from the diets of pregnant women and young children to the effects of chemicals used in plastics. The sample of youngster’s would be more than 100000 youngsters and their mothers. At current stage mothers-to-be recruited for pilot phase in January. Question: Last week in Brussels we were discussing the lack of appropriate data to document EU policies. That’s the example of what is missing and what is needed…

A survey in Australia shows that only 46% of the population would do something on climate change if they were in decision making position. A drastic drop from 55% last year. 1 in 10 wonders still if the phenomenon is really occuring….and another 23% believes in the phenomenon to some extent. Question : Is a problem of lack of information flows to citizen’s or a result of bad communication policy? Do we have relative surveys in Europe?

That’s all folks for today… More news to come on Friday…

Viva La Vida….Viva la Bush…by Coldplay

At first it was an excellent song by Coldplay…. An anti Bush song..released two months ago. I loved the song and its lyrics. Is a parody monologue of Bush. And even if i dont believe that world would become better with Barak Obama (for McCain is a safe bet that world would go worse) i admit that only Nixon could be lower on my scale than Bush’s failure. So i liked the song very much.

And Then a guy, from US probably, took the lyrics and the music, and created a new video

Viva la Bush video. If you watch the images and at the same time listening to the lyrics or read them (for non native english speakers..) its a perfect match.

But yet there is a big issue on the lyrics interpretation (left unclear by Coldplay themselves?)

In the last chorus the lyrics goes

For some reason i can’t explain

I know St Peter won’t call my name

Never an honest word

But that was when i ruled the world

So in song’s context the word “WON’T” gives the negative feeling on Bush administration. And in a magic way, far right groups in USA, change the word to  “WILL” and gave the positive view. That change made the song the most popular in US last month and now is played to churches even.

I think you should judge by yourselves by watching both videos. You will enjoy them.

Well done Coldplay. Well done!!!!

So i’m leting you to enjoy the parody video

But also to listen to the original song by Coldplay
